Tips to share: This & That

August 01, 2017

Mem Fox’s This & That is the perfect book to talk, read, sing and play with thanks to its simple and engaging illustrations, and repetitive phrases.

Talk about all the possibilities of “I’ll tell you a story of this and I’ll tell you a story of that”. Ask your child what they think is happening in the illustrations? What will happen on the next page?

Read the repeated “and then” phrase together each time, running your finger under the words. This helps children to begin to see the link between what we are saying and what they see on the page.

Sing the repetitive phrase, “I’ll tell you a story of this and I’ll tell you a story of that”, in a made up tune. Sing it in the car together and make up your own fantastic story songs. Where are you going? What are you doing for the day? Where can your magic car take you?

Play with an empty box – the possibilities are endless! What can the box become? Will you add a sail? A window? A roof? A steering wheel? Can you paint it, colour it, or join it to other boxes?

Check if your library has Not a Box or Not a Stick by Antoinette Portis and continue to play around with all the possibilities a simple box can bring!
