Look! What does that say?
If you live in a built up or semi-built-up environment, chances are you’ll come across print everywhere you go. From road and pedestrian signs to promotional information at the shops, plus everything in between.
Street signs, road signs, billboards, shop signage and other environmental print are all great examples of the different ways writing is used to share messages. Pointing these out and talking with your child about them is a fun and easy way to help build your child’s understanding about how words work. Start by pointing out any images, icons or shapes and then share the words that accompany them. Explain the meaning of the sign and what its purpose is. Talking about print like this deepens your child’s understanding and makes real life links for them.
Challenge your child to point them out too.
