Early literacy ideas for little ones

June 13, 2017

All through the early years it’s important to give children access to a range of activities and materials that encourage them to engage with literacy. These don’t have to be expensive items. Simple things such as crayons, paintbrushes, pencils or chalk are excellent for learning early literacy skills.

If you want a mess free idea, wet a paintbrush with water and let your child ‘paint the fence’. Talk to your child about what they’ve drawn or what they are doing and for any drawings or paintings, let them see you writing their ‘story’. All of these little moments help with their literacy journey.

Ask your child what their drawing is about and let them see you label it with their story.
